Tales of Berseria Remastered – ett mästerverk i en medioker förpackning.
One of the best games in the Tales series gets a remaster. While it may not be the entry I would have wanted, does the hefty price tag for the Deluxe Edition, along with minor changes and updates, justify this release as a whole?
Read on below to see Velvet’s return in one of the darkest games in the series.

A Story of Revenge and Emotion
While the Tales series always deals with grand schemes or cosmic designs, Tales of Berseria is one of the darker entries and really pulls on the emotional heartstrings. The story begins with Velvet, the main character, living a somewhat normal life with an ailing younger sibling and a brother-in-law who seems noble at first but harbors a deadly secret.
Velvet’s world is thrown into ruin during a Scarlet Night that thrusts the story from a peaceful life into one of the greatest revenge stories of the previous generation. After years of suffering, Velvet is released with nothing but vengeance on her mind. However, those years have changed her; gone is the innocent girl who did anything she could to help, replaced by a hardened warrior with unique bestial abilities who has no problem killing to reach her goal be it beast, daemon, or human.
Tales of Berseria has always featured some of the best writing in the series, and it was a joy to see it fully realized once again in this updated version. However, outside of the story, the game suffers quite heavily from its minimal updates and lack of combat changes. While the remaster offers several quality-of-life changes that are sure to please new and returning players, I personally feel that a little more could have been added to truly justify this release.

Combat
Tales of Berseria offers several characters, each with distinctive playstyles that suit their intended roles. With the ability to toggle combos and AI settings, the game features a very in-depth combat system that allows you to tailor each character to any encounter. Need someone to stun a boss consistently? You can build a combo for Velvet containing nothing but stun bonuses to keep them locked in place. The variety and number of combos available for each character is highly enjoyable and offers plenty of setups for both veterans and newcomers.
The problem with the combat system, however, is that while it is incredibly deep with multiple status effects and systems like Artes, Souls, and the Soul Gauge there is very little reason to play as anyone other than Velvet. Combat encounters end so quickly that there is never a real reason for players to actually learn the mechanics beyond ”Press X, Hit R2, Rinse and Repeat.” You can finish the entire game without much of a challenge. I recommend that players take the time to dive into the mechanics for a more rewarding experience.
Furthermore, the game falls into the classic trap of bombarding the player with a massive amount of information right at the start. It doesn’t give you enough time to fully grasp the mechanics; you’ll likely be halfway through the game before understanding exactly how it all works, and by then, it won’t matter. This is disappointing, as I genuinely enjoy the freedom the system offers.

DLC Additions
With a remastered edition, you’d expect all previous DLC content from the original and perhaps more, right? DLC has always been a hot topic for remasters, and it has definitely been a primary selling point for Tales of Berseria Remastered. However, while some of this content is pleasing, it is juxtaposed by predatory level-boosting packs that add nothing of value to the game.
While I’m happy the Deluxe Edition comes with the Battle BGM pack which features some of the greatest music from the series, I honestly cannot justify the price tag. Yes, the Digital Artbook, soundtrack, and Super Growth Herb set are useful, but the pressing issue is that this remaster is missing quite a lot of content from the 2017 version. While you can earn the majority of outfits through in-game play, there are no costume packs included in the Deluxe Edition. This means you’re paying an additional 20€ (or your regional equivalent) for a digital artbook and music. Where is the Legacy Costume pack? The Idolm@ster pack? They’ve been replaced by these ”+5/+10 level” packs for the party.
It is very disappointing a Deluxe Edition that offers less than the original game’s release. I would hope that for future remasters, we would have access to these legacy costumes from the get-go rather than hunting for parts of them or having them removed entirely.

Conclusion
I cannot overstate how much I enjoy the Tales series. While I would have rather seen a different game in the franchise remastered and reworked for a new generation, Tales of Berseria is still the classic game fans have loved for years. From the likable characters to the combo system that, while divisive, can lead to hours of enjoyment, the fact that the story is one of the best in the series is a massive bonus.
The issue I have is that, aside from minor tweaks, this is essentially the PS4 version with some fresh bells and whistles. This is an incredibly lazy attempt at a remaster. Did I enjoy my time with it? Definitely. I have a soft spot for the series, and Berseria ranks very high for me. However, I’m unsure why this port even exists; its counterparts on PS4 and PC still look great and even outperform the Switch 2 version, which is locked at 30 FPS compared to a stable 60 FPS on other platforms.

Furthermore, I’m flabbergasted that the original Tales of Berseria is currently more expensive on Steam (as of 2026-02-28) than this remastered variant, even when counting the Deluxe DLC.
Overall: If you’ve never played Tales of Berseria and are looking to get into the series, this is a perfectly acceptable (though not great) port. If you already own the original on PS4 or PC, I highly recommend sticking to that edition, as this remaster is not worth the upgrade.

Djup men obalanserad strid
